The rollercoaster that is installing a bottling line.

3 Sad Panda Bottles clinking.
CHEERS!
We expected some bumps in the road, and the road has not disappointed.

What good news!

Our bottling line, Piper, arrived!
Bottling line (not in use).

And the engineer (Nicola) who understands it also arrived and spent the week with us to get it up and running!
Engineer analyzing bottling line performance.

What bad news!

They didn't send the proper fittings to get beer in there!

What good news!

Josh & Nicola are inventive, resourceful souls.  They wangled a fix and we managed to get some beer in there!
Engineer and brewer analyzing bottling line use.

What bad news!

The labeler (that date stamps and applies labels to bottles) hates our labels.  It thinks the label stops before the label actually does.  This causes all manner of havoc.

What good news!

#CRAFTBEERFOLKISGOODFOLK!!!!!

Proving yet again that craft beer folk is good folk, at about 4pm on Friday (of a 3-day weekend, no less), we gave up on the labeler for the moment but still wanted to test the filler for a full batch of beer before Nicola flew out if we could.  We texted a few folks.  On a moment's notice, a dozen of them showed up to hand-label bottles so that we could run the filler.  This is where all the fun comes in, so here's a basic pictorial view of the haps:

These fine folk hand-labeled 2 full pallets of bottles (>2500 bottles total).  ROCKIN'!
[There's a joke in there about how many people it takes to do the job of one labeler --]

Here's how it went.  Only a lot slower.  [Thanks Liz of 363 Photography for the time-lapse videos!]
First full bottle off the line!

Attitude makes all the difference.
"But how will I know if I buy one of these first-run, TLC-infused-hand-applied-label Sad Pandas?" you ask.
None of these bottles have a date stamp on them.  The "BOTTLED JUST FOR YOU ON:" box is sadly devoid of all print.  Y'all just have to know that if you find a bottle like this out in the wild (or more likely, in the tasting room), it was bottled on 1/12/18.   Also, unless you get one labeled by Trina, you'll find a bubble or two in that there hand-applied label.  [See the video above to see why Trina's have zero bubbles.]  Next round should have the date stamp.

We're all about fresh beer, so when we get up and running, please let us know if you ever find an H&D out there that doesn't merit the #freshtastycraftbeer hashtag.
The whole crew who helped do the first bottling run.
Here we all were right before we broke for pizza.

What bad news!

The filler quit on us after about half the bottles were filled.  A day-long diagnostic session on Saturday indicates that the wrong-sized motor was installed and it just plumb wore out after 3 hours (hey hey!  That's what a test run is all about!).  This means, sadly, that no more bottling will take place for a few weeks.

What good news!

There's a new motor on the way!  It'll be installed, we hope, within a month (along with a labeler that senses our fun and colorful labels better, all of us who spent Friday evening here fervently hope).  In the meantime, we will continue to serve up #freshtastycraftbeer to a bar or restaurant near you and continue raising our glasses to small, independent craft!

Thank you mucho for hanging with us through this next step of our
Horse & Dragon adventure.
Hopefully by sometime in 2018 you'll be able to enjoy a bottle of H&D from your local bottle shop
in addition to a great fresh pint at your local pub!

Stay tuned....

Thanksgiving 2017

Looking back through here it's pretty clear we don't blog nearly as often as SEO experts say we should, since we've only posted twice since last Thanksgiving.  [Mad media skillz here.]

In 2014, the year we opened, we were taken by complete surprise when people came in the Wednesday before Thanksgiving to fill 102 growlers.  Though this is a small number by some breweries’ standards, we couldn’t believe how busy it was here, and how wonderful it felt to think of all these people sharing some Horse & Dragon as a part of their Thanksgiving celebrations.  Since then, Thanksgiving weekend has been one of our very favorite times in the taproom, with people sharing their tables with friends and family in for the holiday and strangers they just met over a tasty beer.  Last Wednesday we overheard a young girl saying, “Whoever’s staying in my bedroom is going to have to deal with that.  I don’t know who that is.  Who’s staying in my bedroom?”  SO COOL to think of family crowding in to spend the weekend with each other (and we’re so glad so many of you make craft beer a part of that!).

For the month of November, we put out slips of paper on the bar for people to write “Thanksgiving Thankful Notes” on if they wish to do so.  Here, so far and in no particular order, are this year's:

GABF Week 2017

10/2/2017

If you're on our mailing list, you already got this info, so you can skip this post!

GABF WEEK IS HERE!
(So what does that mean?)

We LOVE the week surrounding the Great American Beer Festival.  See?
Picture
This yearly event, held in Denver, brings craft beer lovers from all over the world. (Seriously.  Our friends who started a brewery in Australia are coming.) For this week, Colorado is even more full than usual of folks who love craft and are focused on enjoying it all week long. There are events here in FoCo and all over Denver focusing on this craft to which we've devoted our hearts & lives -- how can that not be a great week?

The festival itself, which takes place Thursday - Saturday at the CO Convention Center, is a spectacle.  There are thousands of beers to sample (again, seriously -- last year there were close to 4000 different beers you could try).  Of course among these there are several you maybe would be better off skipping, but there are many, many more that are interesting, delicious, or divine.  And the people watching is unparalleled.
Picture
Picture
After our first year's feedback, we take the judging with a giant grain of salt. This year we entered only one of our beers for judging (Picnic Rock Pale Ale, if you're asking, because it was freshest when they needed samples to be dropped off a month ago and stored who-knows-how until judges sample it next week).  We submitted this so that we could participate and pour at the Great Hall for the festival and be a part of this awesome celebration full of people who have committed their futures to craft and full of people who support these small companies.   We also applied to enter Jon Schiller's "Atta Boy, Jon!" Märzen in the Pro-Am competition and got in off the waitlist when some folks couldn't get their beers here in time.

So for us, the festival is not about the competition and awards ceremony [though big ups to the folks who win medals, for sure!].  If we ever are on the receiving end of the crapshoot, we will celebrate and you'll no doubt hear about it.  But in the meantime, we'll be in the Meet the Brewers Hall, having a blast talking with folks who love craft beer, who are willing and eager to give ours a try, and who make the whole week a celebration.

If you live here or can make it to FoCo, starting tomorrow (Saturday) in the taproom we'll be serving a 4-pack flight with the option to rate the beers as to how well they fit the official GABF category in which they would be entered. We'll have make-your-own pretzel necklaces available (festival-goers wear fantastical ones.  e.g.:
Picture
The ones you make in the taproom will not look like this, unless you bring your own supplies.)  We'll also happily give tours on request, of course.

In Denver, we have several fun events at awesome craft accounts from Oct. 2-7.  Please join us at any/all if you are able!
Monday, 5pm -- GABF Week Kickoff Event @Falling Rock Taphouse (they'll be tapping the last keg of Temple's Grand Ale, along with many other amazing beers, and will continue with new tappings every day this week).
Tuesday, 6pm -- Highland Tap & Burger will be featuring beers from our DEN distributors (Colorado Craft Distributors), including H&D!
Tuesday, 7pm -- FreshCraft is having a "locals only" tap takeover.  We'll be there, trying ours and others' beers with FreshCraft's great, as the name suggests, fresh & crafty food. If you've been there, you know. If you haven't, get there!
Wednesday, 9 am, we're attending the CO Environmental Leadership Program Awards Event (and being "inducted" with a Bronze Level award -- woo-hoo!). Looking forward to hearing advice & stories from companies who've been in this program longer and have led the way in going above and beyond regulations to protect our environment!
Wednesday, 3pm -- @LoHi SteakBar, unofficial happy hour with H&D (because we love them & their place, and we want to have some Picnic Rock with their unbelievable food).
Wednesday, 5pm -- Canwood Derby @ Ale House @ Amato's.  Come root for our nth-level car (fashioned by our own #HopticalSolutionist, Jae Drouilhet) to win!  Or cheer for another brewery's vehicle.  We don't mind.  Just come cheer and enjoy a great craft beer or two!
Thursday, 3:30 p.m. -- it's Peanut Butter & Jelly Time @ Lucky Pie Lodo! We're bringing a Sad Panda + peanut butter firkin, and Odell's bringing something jelly-themed, so you'd best meet us before the first GABF session!
Friday, 11-3 -- We're heading to the Industry Brunch @ Southside Kitchen | Bar's Hidden Idol Tiki Bar (hello!  How can you not meet us there & hunt for said idol?)  Lotta' awesome beer on.
Friday, 12-4 -- Cheba Hut (Champa Street) is having a CO-brewery-only tap invasion, and we'll be there, pre-gaming for Friday's GABF session!
Saturday -- double session at GABF.
Sunday -- we all return home and see y'all in the taproom, if you can come in to visit!

Cheers, all.  We hope you have a great week, and that there's some #freshtastycraftbeer in it!

Carol, TimCo, and the H&D Crew

Pairing beer with Fish

The Fish Restaurant & Market family opened its arms (and shared its talent) with almost 100 lucky diners  -- including us! -- over the past two nights.  Chef Ryan & Sous Chef Austin worked their tails off -- along with the rest of the Fish crew -- to provide us with delectable fare paired excellently with H&D brews.  If you're a foodie, a fishie, or a craft beer lover, we hope you've made it in to one of these spectacular dinners.

Thanksgiving Thankful Notes 2016

12/1/2016

Each November, we leave out some paper leaves and pens on the bar, and folks leave thankful notes back.  Below are this year's take on what people wrote they were thankful for.  We censored a couple (but we're happy you're thankful for those things!).  Otherwise, they're presented here exactly as we read them on the leaves, in random order of how they were pulled out of the cornucopia basket.

We wanted to take the opportunity to let the person who wrote simply, "Nothing" on one of the leaves that, if you're serious, reading this, and feel down about having nothing for which to be thankful, please give SummitStone Health Partners a call at 970-494-4200 or walk in to FoCo's new Crisis Walk-In Services Center at 1217 Riverside Ave. in FoCo.  There are great people there who know how to help you get help.

Brewers' Olympics 2016

6/19/2016

Here's our short take on the Brewers' Olympics of 2016.  This is a reason in itself to visit Fort Collins (or play here if you're lucky enough to live here already)!  It kicks off Fort Collins Beer Week (#FCBeerWeek), which culminates in the Colorado Brewers' Festival in downtown FoCo at Washington Park (the last Friday through Sunday in June -- this year, it's 6/24-6/26, with the cool Summit [read:  extra-special beers] taking place on Friday night).

This year the Brewers' Olympics benefited The House that Beer Built II, an effort by 12 NoCO breweries and several local craft-beer-centric businesses, spearheaded by Odell Brewing Company and New Belgium Brewing Company, to help FoCo's Habitat for Humanity build a house this fall for the Beavers family in FoCo.  Watch for other upcoming events that enable each of us to pitch in (financially or with a hammer) to this effort!  (e.g., Check out Bowling with Brewers this Thursday night -- 6/23/16 -- at Chippers Lanes (North College), and watch for our upcoming beer release, Groundwork Red IPA, the proceeds from which will go directly to the HTBBII effort).

I'm uploading our pictures below -- if you want the commentary, click on the picture to read our ever-so-accurate editorial take on the day.  Suffice it to say that this day is one of the reasons we 100% love FoCo.

Despite our best efforts, we failed to bring The Torch home to H&D for another year -- it'll be residing at Fort Collins Brewery for 2016-2017.  Big ups to them.  We'll bring our best game next year, though, so be prepared, all y'all!

First stop is a video (borrowed from FCBeerWeek's Instagram), of our team's entrance. Backstreet Boys got nothin' on them.  Or at least, they brew beer really well!

Horse & Dragon Half Marathon & Pint Run (6/12/16)

6/16/2016

As you might guess if you've ever walked 1/8th of the way to Horsetooth Rock with us, TimCo & I don't run.  To those of you who did -- of all ages -- in costume and not -- for 13.1 miles or for 1.6 last Sunday -- thanks for including us in your running culture for the morning.  It was awesome and impressive.

8 million thanks to Betsy Fisher & Steve Cathcart for planning and executing the whole thing, to Book Trust for being a generally awesome and A-1 charity partner, to Patrick Bols & Jimmie Hinkle for letting me use some of your photos, and to the companies who sponsored it (see below) so that Book Trust kids can choose & own books next school year.  And a shout-out to the FoCo Police Department for making it all work despite Ma Nature's best efforts during runoff season. (Possibly the first tag-in/tag-out 1/2 marathon in the US?  Hang on.  There's real terminology for this; let me look at Betsy's email.  "Transition crossing" with "timing out" and "timing in".)

A few fun stats:  346 total participants signed up representing 4 countries (woohoo howdy, you folks from Colombia!) and 16 states.  There were 221 finishers in the Half Marathon and 84 finishers in the Pint Run.

Here are some moments captured by Jimmie and Patrick.   (And a couple by me.  Yes, I took a picture of a purse.) There are more posted on the event page.  With my amazing web skills, I cannot make the captions stay where they should be so please try to sort it out if you're reading them!

Cheers and congrats to all of you healthy and happy folk.  Thanks for registering, running, and relaxing afterward, and for contributing to Book Trust.  If you'd like to attend a Book Trust book delivery one day next school year in FoCo or Denver, give us a holler via email at [email protected].
Picture
Did not know that if only I could run, I could cross this type of finish line.
Picture
Many thanks to Kristine McAuliff & Linda Mitchell of Book Trust, who came up from DEN to participate (Here's Kristine pacing behind the awesome Scholastic Books books table before all you runners got here.)
Picture
Some of the wonderful NoCO Book Trust board members -- Joanna, Michele, & MaryPat -- serving up #freshtastycraftbeer.  Next year, a photo of Holly, who was carding y'all, too!

So here's the start of the 1/2.  We missed this.  Love our landscape, and all you runners.

Lean left!

HUGE SHOUTOUT TO CASA DEL MATADOR  in the Foothills Mall.  If you've not been there, go there. Great food.  And they donated all your burritos, without any questions, to support Book Trust.

Picture
When I saw you could check a box to get a medal (mind you, as previously stated, I wasn't registering to RUN), I wondered which on earth adult would want such a thing.  And then I saw these. Hello! Amy Hayman (local artist/potter) is amazeballs, clearly.  And I need a link to her webpage, but I cannot find it.

Sustenance!

Picture
Some people seriously RAN the pint run.  I mean. Timothy Cruz finished in 10:21, and Jennifer Lee finished in 11:43 PUSHING A STROLLER. [These, BTW, are course records. Heh heh heh.]  Some guy (Paul Stein) finished the half in 1:19:46, and some gal (Susan Cundiff) finished it in 1:37:31.  The mind spins.

Picture
Picture
Strolling is also good.  Especially if you can pull off these guys' style while doing so.

These people.  You would think they are plants by us.  But they are just good people, supporting folks.  Thanks to them for taking us along on the run!

Some spectators dressed up, too. Would love to have posted the very overwhelmingly cute photos of 3 towheads & Dad cheering on Mom (complete with poster) but I figure not all parents want their offsprings' faces posted online....

Ken wore a silk jacket (with dragon design) and ran fast enough to make it billow out like dragon's wings.  Extra credit.

MIRAMONT!
Provided transport from here to there and everywhere.  If you work out (and I know you do, because we saw y'all buffed out and whatnot), check out their climbing wall up here by H&D.  As well as all their other facilities, o'course.

I'm fairly certain this guy on the left won the half.  Or at least, transformed himself from my size to his in the last 18 months and ran like crazy. Plus, has good friends.

Picture
Gotta' love a pink dragon!

Picture
Clearly, won a costume award...
Picture
...this one, too.  Think this is the one pushed by the Pint Run winner, Jennifer Lee?

Dragon?  He's got the right attitude!

Just your average summer Saturday for a FoCo craft brewery here.  This is a great example of why we love this industry.

We started out setting up for the #FortLoveBrewersJamboree at Legacy Park.  Taste, sip, learn.
Picture
Picture
Picture
First off, we get to bike there, past the awesome Cache la Poudre River (I tried to capture the chorusing combo of frogs, birds, and 12 Cents for Marvin warming up on video, but I managed to mess up the sound so all you get is this photo!)
Picture
Yes, there is a helmet under that hat -- of course!  If you're not familiar with TimCo's examples, made right after H&D opened, of why we should all wear helmets when bicycling, come on in to the taproom and take a look at his former helmet.
Here's brewer Z from 1933 Brewing Company (and the inimitable Dotys).
Picture
Z looks pretty calm there considering this is what he had planned for later in the Jamboree:

Slightly creepy photo -- relaxing before the gates open.

Limagrain Cereal Seeds & Troubadour Maltings in the house!
Picture
Come to the Jamboree!  Meet fun people (here:  Peter Bouckaert of NBB fame, Frezi Bouckaert of FoCo fame, and TatumCo)...
Picture
...and eat great food at the VIP tent!
Picture
One of us got to leave the Jamboree to head up Rist Canyon and see Team Rubicon in action. This team of veterans spent the weekend clearing hazardous dead timber left from the High Park Fire, keeping their skills honed for any upcoming emergency, and bonding over shared experiences (past and present). They are the best-natured, hardest-working, and most team-oriented people around. [We brought them a bit of libation for post-work hours.  If you think a cold beer tastes good after mowing the lawn....] Read more about what Team Rubicon is and does at this link.
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
They haul massive limbs and wield a chainsaw with ease
(and translate & sling water containers on an an emergency mission to Ecuador post-earthquake) -- and all the while, under their work gloves...
Picture
Many thanks to Team Rubicon for all your work, and to Lisa Smith (top row far right) for inviting Horse & Dragon to come take a look!  Y'all can read about TR's Clay Hunt Fellows, which Lisa was just awarded/named for the coming year, here.
Picture
Meanwhile, back at the taproom of a Saturday:
Picture
Big ups to our Saturday team of Claire, Hayden, Liz, and Benjamin for holding it all together (as always) while the rest of us were out of pocket!
Liz MIGHT have started the shift changing an angry keg of Sad Panda.  Addition to the H&D lexicon:  "I Panda'd my pants."

Terrific Twos!  4/29/16-5/1/16

Huge gracias to you folks who came to help us celebrate finishing off our 2nd year and commencing our 3rd!  We had a blast thanks to so many of you all and your attitude toward #freshtastycraftbeer, each other, and FoCo.

Check out the charities you supported last weekend in the blog post below this one.
Before May 1, we had a pre-party at The Mayor of Old Town on the 2nd anniversary of our first tapped beer anywhere on earth!  4/17/14 The Mayor tapped H&D Stout & Almost Summer Ale -- they put the throw-back brand labels on the tap handles for 4/14/16!
We spent a fun couple of evenings reliving other pre-opening bashes at Tap & Handle and Pinball Jones as well.

We had a great team dinner at Canino's Italian (if you've not been, go!)

Starting Friday, this brew-ha-ha began at the taproom.  (Hover on pix for captions.)  It was great to see so many old friends, meet some new ones, and celebrate craft beer together.  People brought flowers, and Sharpie bouquets, and coloring supplies, and Sad Panda ice cream and cookies upon cookies, and smiles.
Cheers to 2 years of great people, great times,
and great beers!
