If you visit us in the taproom, you'll realize in a moment that Horse & Dragon Brewing Company, like many craft breweries, is a family-run place. Founded by Tim & Carol Cochran, but run (and occasionally overrun) by friends and family, you'll find our daughters behind the bar and our small staff being corralled into the fam.
Carol grew up in Colorado, Tim in Oregon (both great craft beer states!). We met at school in Northern California and fell in love with the taste of craft beers in 1987 at the Tied House in Mountain View. We’ve dreamed of and planned for the Horse & Dragon since our honeymoon, which we took in Napa Valley (the non-Colorado one) and during which we had every dinner at a local brewpub. Since then we’ve spent many years traveling and sampling beers from around the world. We grew up in the U.S. West (where the horse has played such an important role for generations), lived for 10 years in Asia (where the dragon is an important symbol in many cultures), 10 years in Milwaukee, and 2+ years in Colombia. With roots and family in Fort Collins and a compelling urge to spend time in the Poudre Canyon, we returned to this beautiful town every year – always enjoying the local craft beer scene and reveling in its growth. In January of 2013 we began planning for Horse & Dragon Brewing Company in earnest. In May of 2014 we opened to the public. Through great flavors and happy craft beer experiences, we hope to help bring more people together in the community of Fort Collins and in the larger community of craft beer.
Luke Margheim is Horse & Dragon's POATA*. A true beer aficionado, he'll be happy to talk beer (and food!) with you at length. Horse & Dragon’s Head Brewer is Tanner Hulse, who joined us in October of 2020 after brewing for Deschutes Brewing Company and Maui Brewing Company. Tanner grew up in Greeley, CO and attended Colorado School of Mines in Golden, CO before becoming a brewer. We're happy he's back in NoCO and enjoy his delicious creations. He's joined by Dylan Osborne, who works to keep our packaging lines happy and running. In this he's assisted by Andre Caron and some of our tasting room team.
Also around town you'll see Chop (or Jeff), Laura and Nathan - they bring #freshtastycraftbeer all around NoCO.
Both Cochran daughters work with us -- Trina (Trinasaurus Rex) does our bookkeeping, graphic design, manages some supply chain partnerships, and steps in at the tasting room when needed. Tatum (Compulsive Dancer) manages the tasting room, events, and production schedule. Our great tasting room team is made up of Leighanne Alford, Marleyna Baggett (Beer Librarian), Samuel Clark, Bree Emerson, Matt Flick, Jerick Flores, and Sofia Woods. They are some of the friendliest beer folk around. Please, come on in and chat beer with us.
Horse & Dragon’s beer should go well with many of your favorite foods and we hope you fall into the habit of stopping by the taproom to say hello and grab a CANtainer of your preferred brand to take home to share at dinner, or of ordering a pint to accompany your meal when you’re out and about in Fort Collins or elsewhere.
